Having your impact windows installed is an exciting time. You are protecting your home and your family from elements that could potentially cause severe destruction. Installing impact windows and doors, however, is a long process. This guide will help you understand the impact window and door installation process to better prepare for the big day.

Start by Getting Your Quote

This first step is crucial. Having impact windows and doors not suited for your area can be disastrous. So, take your time when researching your contractors. Aim for someone local to the area as they are better suited to understand what you need. You will also want to check for the following:

  • Warranty
  • Insurance
  • Permits
  • Price

Speak to any neighbors with impact windows and ask them about the contractors they used and their experiences with said contractors. This will point you in the direction of locally trusted contractors.

Get Your Home Measured

Once you have spoken to a contractor and agreed on styles and prices, they will send someone to measure your windows. This is a chance to go over any questions or concerns you have or make any changes to the plan. After gathering the measurements, the contractors will arrange for the building of your windows. It will be costly to change your mind after this point.

Installation Process Deliver and Dates

This is the longest part of the impact window and door journey. Waiting for delivery. Expect this to take between 3 and 6 weeks.

Delivery to your contractors’ warehouse will ensue shortly after their creation. They will call you to arrange installation dates. When it comes to deciding on a date, keep the following in mind:

  • Children and Pets will need to be somewhere safe.
  • You want space for the contractors to work around your windows. This means pulling away any furniture inside the home and taking down any curtains, blinds, or decorations you have in your window. You will need to make sure your contractors have a clear path to access all your windows outside your home.
  • The Weather. Check your contractors’ weather policy. This may delay your work.

The Installation Process on the Day of Work

When your windows arrive, before your contractors start work, take a moment to go through your windows and check the materials and specs. Also, keep an eye open for anything that might have broken in transit or any cracks that appeared. If you see anything that doesn’t meet standards, let your contractor know so he can rectify the issue as soon as possible.

Depending on the size of your home, installing your windows and doors can take one day or three days. Your contractor will work one window or door at a time protecting your home from the elements, which is useful if they have to come back the next day to finish.

Keep in mind that the unexpected may happen. Most windows installations go smoothly, but occasionally a contractor may find an issue with your home when they take the old windows out. If this happens to you, try not to panic. Discuss the problem with your contractor, be aware that extra work or materials may put up your price but remember that this is about the safety of your home and family. Your contractor should be able to help you work out the next step. If it is something they cannot fix themselves, they will know what kind of contractor is needed and may have one in mind. If you have researched and hired a trustworthy contractor, you should trust that they know what you need to be safe.

After the Installation Process

After installation, and during the cleanup, is a good time to check all your windows. There should be no gaps between the window and the frame, sill, or wall. Also, windows should open without sticking.

If you take your contractor round with you during these checks, they will also be able to remind you of warranty details and information in the unlikely event of a fault appearing. Make sure you put your paperwork somewhere safe.
