There’s been a lot of work leading to this day. You will have spent hours researching the right company to use, and even more time debating the best window style for your home. You may even have been looking at the options of moving the windows to allow for better lighting and views inside the home. Finally, after all the preparation and waiting for delivery, the day of the window installation is here. Here’s what you can expect on the day.

Prepare for Window Installation

You have work to do before the contractors can begin. Here are some things you can do to make the day smoother.

  • Rehome your pets and kids, just for the day. You don’t want young ones to be getting underfoot during construction work.
  • Pull any furniture, inside and outside your home, away from the windows to give the contractors easy access.
  • Clear your windows.
  • Remove any plant pots from underneath your windows.

Some things to Check Before Installation Begins

Once the windows arrive, before your workers can begin, it is important to check your windows. You will want to make sure that:

  • You have the right window sizes and styles.
  • Check for any breakages and check to see if any cracks are on your windows.

If you see something that doesn’t match up to what you were expecting to arrive that day, discuss the issue with your contractor before the work goes ahead. It is harder to rectify a window issue after they are installed.

Replacing Your Windows

Depending on the size of your home, installing your windows and doors can take 1 day or 3 days. Any good contractor will work one window or door at a time. To take all the windows out at once is to expose your home to the elements. By taking the approach of “one window out one window in” your home will be protected even if they have to come back the next day to finish the job.

Keep in mind that the unexpected may happen. While most window installation goes smoothly, occasionally a contractor may find an issue with your home when they take the old windows out. If this happens, calmly discuss the problem with your contractor. They will have the knowledge and the experience to approach the issue in the safest and most practical way. However, be aware that extra work or materials may put up the price.

If it is a problem your contractor cannot fix themselves, they should be able to help you work out the next step. They may even know someone they can call on your behalf.

Before Your Window Installation Contractor Leaves

Take a moment to walk through your house with your contractor before he leaves. Together you can ensure that every window is perfectly in place. You will be looking out for:

  • Gaps between the window and the frame, sill, and wall. You want your impact windows to be flush and gap-free.
  • Your windows open and close without sticking or creaking. If you find issues here it normally means your window sash needs adjusting.

Finally, go over warranty details and any final questions you may have with your contractor before placing your paperwork in a safe and secure location.
